Peter Messiaen, MD PhD, obtained his PhD in 2013 in the field of HIV translational research and molecular virology under supervision of Prof. Dr. Linos Vandekerckhove. He investigated the role of genetic polymorphisms of cellular co-factors (LEDGF/p75) involved in proviral DNA integration and the impact on HIV disease progression. Other research topics were the implementation of new diagnostic tools as ultra-deep pyrosequencing of HIV quasispecies in detecting drug resistance in vivo and the implementation of new antiretroviral drug classes in clinical practice. Part of this research was performed at Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and University of Alcalá, Madrid, Spain.
He currently holds a position as visiting Professor of Medicine at Hasselt University, Belgium and Infectious Disease consultant at the Department of Infectious Diseases and Immunity at Jessa Hospital Hasselt, with a special interest in HIV medicine and antibiotic stewardship. He is head of the HIV clinic in Hasselt and assistant Professor at the BIOMED research institute of Hasselt University.
